about

Sometime in the summer of 2022 the Black Pumas took a break from touring and drummer Stephen Bidwell found himself at home and with a Monday night residency at the South Austin bar C-Boys. The residency was a clear ploy to get his 10-piece afrobeat band Hard Proof onstage but corralling that whole group on regular weeknights proved too challenging and Bidwell opted to assemble different groups for most of the nights.

The residency was brief, but had some life affirming moments, like the one or two nights when Sam Pankey and Cat Clemons came through. After the first set, Pankey remarked that it sounded like a record, a sentiment Bidwell remembered when an engineer at a brand-new high-end studio offered a free day of recording as partial payment for an electric piano.

The lads rehearsed a bit, got sounds, and let loose, captured on a brand-new Neve board in a freshly treated room. This set of music is three of Austin’s finest multi-genre sidemen improvising; at times freely, at times over songs that aren’t yet standards, and some eye-opening readings of post-bop conventions.

They establish a trio concept here that a jaded critic would attempt to assign a reductive name to, but that would be a waste of time. The music on this album is raw, powerful, and uncompromising. It is not for the faint of heart. But it is music that needs to be heard. It is music that will challenge you, make you think, and move you.
